If you are dissatisfied with the assessment of your competence or with the accreditation of studies completed elsewhere, you may lodge a re-assessment request orally or in writing. There are two phases to requesting a reassessment of a grade:

1. Requesting a reassessment from the person who carried out the assessment

If you are dissatisfied with the grading of your competences, you must request, verbally or in writing, a reassessment from the person who carried out the assessment. The same procedure is followed if you are dissatisfied with the recognition of credits earned from studies completed elsewhere or competences demonstrated otherwise.

Reassessment requests concerning the assessment of studies must be submitted within 14 days of having access to the results of the assessment and the application of the assessment criteria to the study attainment, e.g. when you have received the thesis statement. Reassessment requests concerning the recognition of  studies completed elsewhere must be filed within 14 days of receiving the decision.

The teacher will provide a reply to the re-assessment request within 14 days of having received the request.

2. Requesting a reassessment from the Board of Examiners

Students who are dissatisfied with the first instance decision may appeal to the Laurea Board of Examiners within 14 days of receiving the decision. (Act 932/2014, Section 57). No appeals may be filed for decisions made by the Board of Examiners.

Reassessment requests must include the entity for which reassessment is requested, your demands, justifications for these, and your name, degree programme, campus and contact details. In addition, the following documents must be appended: a copy of the entity assessed (provided that it is to be retained), the bases of assessment and any other documents you would like to refer to.

Reassessment requests should be sent to the Board of Examiners at tutkintolautakunta@laurea.fi. Students whose first language is not Finnish have the right to send written documents and other materials to the Board in English and to receive the decision, with justifications, in English.

Handling of the reassessment request in the Laurea Board of Examiners

The Board of Examiners is summoned by its Chairman when necessary. The Chairman does the preparatory work pertaining to the reassessment requests to be handled in the meeting and informs the lecturer who made the assessment in question. Lecturers may hand in their own views on the case within 14 days during their working hours. At their discretion, the Chairman of the Board of Examiners may also request to see other supplementary documents or evidence from the parties concerned or from external experts. Decisions regarding requesting supplementary documents or consulting the parties concerned or experts may also be made by the Board of Examiners in a meeting.

In handling reassessment requests and justifying its decisions, the Board applies the Polytechnics Act and Decree as well as Laurea’s degree regulations, operating regulations and thesis guidelines. The Board keeps all reassessment matters confidential. The possibility of conflicts of interest in any Members of the Board is discussed at the beginning of each meeting.

Communicating the decision

The Board of Examiners will send a written notice of its decision, with justifications, to the address provided by the student within six weeks (without counting July) of receiving the reassessment request.

The Board will also send the decision, with justifications, to the lecturer in question and their supervisor. If the decision results in a grade change, it is also communicated to the Student Affairs Office of the unit in question, where the new grade is entered into the study register. Decisions of the Board of Examiners cannot be appealed against (Act 932/2014, Section 57).

Handling problems related to the tutoring relationships

Any possible problems related to the guidance relationship between the student and the teacher will be discussed in talks between the parties. If necessary, the student can contact the teacher’s supervisor, The parties can also seek support for the resolution of the matter from the head of the higher education unit or a person appointed by them.
