Short exchanges are usually international periods lasting from three days up to eight weeks. All degree students at Laurea can participate in exchanges. Students may receive funding to support the arrangements for the exchange; the amount depends on the type of funding, duration and the distance from Laurea’s Tikkurila campus.
If you are interested in participating in an exchange, we encourage you to read the instructions below carefully and follow them.
NOTE. The application deadlines for long exchanges do not apply to short exchanges. Check short exchange application deadlines and instructions from the short exchange news on the intranet or from the relevant degree programme.
When applying for an exchange the application must be sent one month before the start of the exchange to allow sufficient time for processing the application and booking travel.

Important information on short exchanges and intensive weeks
1. What kinds of short exchange opportunities exist?
Erasmus+ “Blended Intensive Programme” (BIP) programmes
Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) means a course that combines physical and virtual joint learning. A BIP course is organised by three higher education institutions participating in the Erasmus+ programme from three different Erasmus+ programme countries. These are short study modules (min. 3 ECTS per BIP course) that enable participation even for those for whom long-term individual mobility would not be possible.
Short exchanges organised by Laurea
An international period is often included in a Laurea study module. You apply for the study module during the normal enrolment period. In some cases a motivation letter is also required so that the student selections can be made.
Short-term exchanges organised independently by students (e.g. summer or winter schools)
A student may participate in short exchanges advertised on the intranet that are not Erasmus+-funded. Laurea’s own grant is available for this. Courses must provide credits that can be included in the student’s degree.
- Participating students must familiarise themselves with the criteria for short term exchange to check whether they are eligible for support.
European Nursing Module (ENM)
European Nursing Module (ENM)
The ENM network offers nursing and public health nursing students the opportunity to take part in a two-week short exchange in European partner countries. During the exchange, students participate in theory teaching organised by the host institution two days a week and practise in a clinical environment three days a week. The placement is observational “hands-off” practice, where the main objective is to observe the nursing culture of the host country. The exchange programme also includes various cultural events depending on the destination country.
The exchange takes place annually during the same weeks in March, May and October. The application process at your own school should be started about 6 months before a possible exchange. You can check the list of partner institutions and destinations from Laurea’s ENM coordinator.
Students accepted for ENM follow the same process in making the SoleMove mobility application as students applying for other exchanges. Laurea’s own grant is available to cover exchange costs. For more information on funding, see the funding sections on this page.
Start the application process by contacting Laurea UAS’s ENM coordinator: anu.haavisto@laurea.fi
NOTE! In each exchange, upon acceptance to the programme participating students must request a confirmation (“confirmation of study visit”) from their tutor teacher, confirming that participation (5 credits) fits into their studies.
Watch a short video about the ENM exchange!
2. Current opportunities
See the list of current short exchange opportunities: Short Mobilities for students.xlsx
Read the news opened from the links and its contained links carefully. Also note the application timing; each short exchange has its own schedule.
3. How do I apply for a short exchange?
- Discuss with your tutor teacher whether participation in the course is possible in relation to your studies and how it will be recognised in your degree. Complete the teacher’s confirmation form and ask the tutor teacher to sign it. This will be attached to the Solemove application.
- Apply for the exchange according to the instructions provided for that exchange
- After receiving approval from the partner institution, proceed to the Solemove application (instructions for filling out the application)
- Next you will receive an automated message with instructions for creating the learning agreement and for the funding application
Familiarise yourself with the host thoroughly and proceed with the application according to the instructions. In some exchanges you apply directly to the receiving institution and then proceed to the Solemove application, and in others the order is reversed.
NOTE! The application deadlines for long exchanges do not apply to short exchanges. Check short exchange application deadlines and instructions from the news or the relevant degree programme.
4. Who can apply for a short exchange? Criteria for student selection
All Laurea degree students can apply for short exchanges. However, it is good to note the differing possibilities of receiving funding. See more on the grant tab. A student may apply for a maximum of 2 short exchanges during the academic year.
Participants must have a good command of English sufficient for studying and for various professional situations. Host institutions may have their own requirements regarding required language skills. The credits to be completed during the exchange must fit into your PSP. You cannot earn extra credits during the exchange. Study your host institution’s requirements carefully. The student should be flexible, proactive, able to accept diversity and have good interaction skills. Awareness of Finland, and the willingness and ability to represent Finland and Laurea abroad.
If there are more applicants for the same short exchange than we can send, we additionally use the following criteria for selection:
- Priority is given to students who have not previously been on an exchange
- Selections prioritise students from the field specified by the partner institution
- Grades of completed study modules
- Completed credits (according to your PSP)
5. Erasmus+ BIP short exchange grants

Accessibility or inclusion support (Erasmus+, TFK and Nordplus)
In some mobility programmes it is also possible to receive accessibility or inclusion support based on actual costs.

7. Travel arrangements, insurances, safety
The student is responsible for booking travel and accommodation independently. An exception may be some teacher-led group trips where these arrangements have been planned in advance.
Passport, visa, residence permit

- An EU citizen must register their residence in another EU country if the stay lasts longer than 3 consecutive months. A student visa is required for countries outside the EU. Check the situation with the destination country’s embassy or consulate.
- Non-EU citizens: if the exchange is shorter than three months, one may travel to the Schengen area with a Finnish residence permit. If the exchange is longer than three months, a separate residence permit must be applied for each destination country.

- Laurea students are insured by statutory accident insurance, complemented by voluntary group accident insurance. The insurances are valid worldwide. The statutory accident insurance covers accidents occurring in curriculum-based studies and in practical training / unpaid internships both at home and abroad.
- Laurea’s insurance does not, however, cover leisure time or illnesses, so students going on exchange or internships should also take out travel insurance that covers accidents and illnesses during leisure time, as well as repatriation, trip cancellation and interruption. The student must ensure that the insurance coverage is adequate for the destination country. When taking out insurance, it is advisable to mention the destination country and any countries you plan to visit during the exchange.
- Laurea’s insurance also does not cover damage to luggage, so taking out baggage insurance is highly recommended. Members of Laureamko receive discounts on insurance products with the SAMOK student card; ask Laureamko for more details at Laureamko.
- Taking out all necessary insurances is the student’s own responsibility.
- Citizens of EU/EEA countries can receive healthcare also in other member states; Finland has agreements with some other countries as well. To receive healthcare in other EU/EEA countries you need the European Health Insurance Card. More information at Kela’s website.
- The student insurance handbook can be found on the intranet Student insurances page.
