Statutory accident insurance
All students are covered by statutory accident insurance. The statutory accident insurance compensates for accidents that occur in Finland and abroad during practical training included in the curriculum and during unpaid work placements.
Take travel insurance for the duration of your student exchange
Laurea’s insurance, however, does not cover baggage, leisure time or illnesses, so students going on exchange or to placements should also take out travel insurance as additional coverage. Travel insurance covers accidents and illnesses occurring during leisure time, as well as repatriation, trip cancellation and interruption.
Make sure that the insurance coverage is sufficient for the destination country of your exchange. When arranging insurance, it is a good idea to mention the destination country and any other countries you plan to visit during your exchange. You must also take out travel insurance yourself for study trips.
Group insurance
The group insurance covers accidents to students during theory lessons, physical education classes and journeys to and from school. It also covers accidents occurring while the student participates in joint events organised as part of the curriculum and the direct journeys home related to these events. The insurances do not cover purely property damage. The institution does not compensate for lost items. You may want to consider taking out a home insurance policy. In cases covered by the group insurance, the student pays the treatment and other costs first and then applies for compensation from the insurance company with a claim form.
Members of Laureamko receive a discount on If Group’s insurance products with the SAMOK student card.
What to do if an accident occurs
If the accident is acute:
- If the accident requires an immediate doctor’s visit, see a doctor and pay the costs yourself; keep the receipt for the payment.
- Contact student services and report the accident.
- The student office will assist you in filing the damage report and will forward it to the insurance company. Attach the receipt from the doctor’s visit to the claim. You will need Laurea’s business ID (Y-tunnus) to make the notification, which is: 1046216-1.
- The insurance company will send you a decision regarding compensation by mail.
In non-acute cases of damage:
- If the accident does not require immediate medical attention, first contact student services to obtain an insurance certificate (for damages covered by IF insurance). This way you will not have to pay the doctor’s fees yourself.
- Student services will help you file the claim.
- The insurance company will send you a decision regarding compensation by mail.
Contact student services to file a claim in the event of damage.
If the accident occurs on a study trip, during a student exchange or on a training trip related to the curriculum (more than 50 km away)
You may choose the treatment facility yourself abroad and present your travel insurance certificate there. Usually, foreign treatment facilities accept the travel insurance certificate and bill LähiTapiola directly. If you have to pay the bill yourself first, claim the costs when filing the damage report or report the costs by phone afterwards. For more extensive examinations or treatments, treatment facilities require a payment guarantee.
Contact If’s travel emergency service (open 24/7) if you need a payment guarantee or in case of an emergency. The travel emergency service provides assistance in Finnish, Swedish and English. Phone number +358 10 19 19 99.
