Our way of studying

At Laurea, studying is more practical than in some traditional universities. Students work on real-life projects with companies, instead of only listening to lectures. We believe learning by doing, working in teams, and solving problems together.

Please note some important notes when planning your exchange:

At Laurea, there is still theory, but the focus is on applying knowledge in real situations. This means students at Laurea often gain work experience and practical skills during their studies not just academic knowledge.

  • Studies in universities of applied sciences include group projects and practical assignments.
  • Students are advised to take courses primarily from the degree programme you apply to
  • Some courses have a limited number of places available.
  • Exchange students should take 30-35 ECTS per semester and we recommend taking no more than 10 ECTS of virtual studies.
  • 27 hours of student work is 1 ECTS credit. It includes contact lessons but also project work, homework, and independent study.
  • Schedules for the courses are confirmed a few months before the semester.

Study methods and environments

Studies at Laurea include both traditional teacher-led courses with lectures and project-based studies carried out in cooperation with real companies.

The Laurea learning model, Learning by Developing (LbD), focuses on practical projects with real-life companies and organizations while students simultaneously gain theoretical and practical knowledge.

Project-based courses require active participation, independent work, and initiative from students.

Learning by Developing helps students build future work-life skills and prepares them for evolving professional demands.Students can read more about study methods and the digital platforms used at Laurea on the institution’s website.
