Laurea’s story
Laurea University of Applied Sciences (previously Vantaa University of Applied Sciences and Espoo-Vantaa University of Applied Sciences) started operations in 1991 in Vantaa. It was among the first universities of applied sciences in Finland to receive an experimental licence.
The experimental licence was extended in 1997 – 1998 to cover nearly 20 institutions in the province of Uusimaa. At that time the university of applied sciences was named Espoo-Vantaa University of Applied Sciences after the main owner cities.
The Government made the operation of the university of applied sciences permanent in 2000 and in 2001 the name became Laurea University of Applied Sciences.
