What are cross-institutional studies?

Cross-institutional studying means that you have the opportunity to take studies from another UAS or university. The cross-study study offering is designed to complement your opportunities to combine studies suitable for your degree. Please only take as many courses as you need for your degree.

Note when selecting courses:

  • For a bachelor’s degree you can choose bachelor-level studies and for a master’s degree you can choose master’s level studies
  • If necessary, confirm the suitability of the study unit for your PSP with your teacher tutor
  • The study unit must provide you with new competence and must not overlap with your other studies
  • Replacement of a compulsory course must be agreed in advance
  • The total scope of the degree must not be exceeded unless agreed upon in advance
  • The evaluation of a cross study will automatically transfer to your PSP in Pakki, and it cannot be removed afterwards

Below you can see where you can take cross-study courses and instructions on how to enrol in them.

3AMK is a strategic alliance of the three largest universities of applied sciences in the Helsinki metropolitan area—Haaga-Helia, Laurea and Metropolia. The alliance offers joint courses that mainly support international students, focusing on their integration and employment. The offering also includes some well-regarded study units that are offered jointly to Laurea, Haaga-Helia and Metropolia students.

All 3AMK courses are open and free for Laurea degree students, exchange students and Open UAS pathway students.

CampusOnline is a joint network that features studies from over 20 universities of applied sciences. You can choose study units from a wide selection that suit your degree. Make sure that the study unit is suitable for your degree by, for example, checking if there is information available on programme-specific and generic studies PSP pages. The courses are free for degree students, exchange students and Open UAS pathway students.

Study offerings and enrolment dates can be viewed through Pakki.

If you wish to study language and communication courses, check the offerings of the KiVANET and KiViTa networks. The KiVANET cooperation network offers a wide learning path for various languages from A1 level to C1 level. KiViTa is a language and communication offering platform for higher education institutions in the Helsinki metropolitan area, and its offering includes especially domestic languages. The courses are mostly implemented flexibly as remote and online studies.

Enrolling in cross-study courses

You can enroll to most cross-institutional studies directly in Pakki. Before enrolling, add the course to your PSP under a suitable module title.

Please note that maintenance work due to updates may cause disruptions in the cross-study service on the first Tuesday of every month between 9:00–12:00.

  1. Browse the study offering in your student’s desktop Pakki and add the studies to your PSP: In Pakki you can see cross-study offering that matches the level of your degree studies. You can view the cross-study offering from “Course selection” tab in your PSP. We recommend adding cross-institutional studies either under the “Other complementary competence” -module or to a module title based on the topic. Click the magnifying glass icon next to the module to view the offering.  Select “cross-studies” from the search field and filter options using the left-hand menu. After adding the study unit to your PSP, please schedule it on the “timing” tab.
  2. Before enrolling, carefully review the implementation plan: click the name of the study unit to open the implementation and schedule.
  3. Enrol for a cross-institutional study unit on the “Enrolments” tab. Enrol in the same way as you would for Laurea study units. If you have previously added the study unit to your PSP and there are open enrolments for it, you will see the implementation in the “Enrolment ongoing” section and can enrol from there as well. Please note that you must give a permission that information regarding your study entitlement is transferred to the system of the study’s host organization.
  4. If the course requires registration into a small group, the selection must be made during the enrolment phase. If the selection is not mandatory, you can skip it by pressing “Save” (leave the field empty).

You can cancel your enrolment (including an accepted enrolment) in Pakki on the Enrolments tab during the enrolment period. The course will remain in your PSP with the status “Enrolment in progress”. If you wish to cancel your enrolment after the enrolment period has ended, contact the university you enrolled in directly.

When you are accepted onto an implementation and a study right is established at the host university, you will receive detailed instructions from the organizing university to your Laurea email. Follow the instructions you receive.

If you have enrolled in a cross-study course via Pakki, the course completion and grade will automatically appear in your PSP when the course is graded at the host university. Components of the implementation do not transfer to Pakki. You can view component completions from the host university student’s workspace study attainments.

If you have not enrolled in the other university’s courses via Pakki, your results will not automatically transfer to Pakki after you complete the study unit. You can transfer these studies to Laurea’s study register by following the instructions below:

  1. Go to https://opintopolku.fi/oma-opintopolku/
  2. Under “My completed studies” click “Proceed to studies” and log in with your bank credentials.
  3. Click “Jaa suoritustietoja” and select the studies you wish to share. You can select studies from one or more universities.
  4. Click “Jaa valitsemasi opinnot” to generate a sharing link. Set the link validity to approx. 2–3 months so that the studies can be recorded also during busy periods.
  5. Check how the studies appear in the browser (Katso miltä suoritusote näyttää selaimessa) so you know what information you are sending.
  6. Copy the link or links and send them from your Laurea email to puro.laurea@laurea.fi.
  7. Attach the link or links and specify in the message which studies you want to transfer to your PSP if the sharing link includes multiple courses and some may already be recorded.
  8. Study Services will record the credits within three weeks. During busy periods it may take longer. When the study appears in Pakki, you can go to StudyInfo and deactivate the link.

If you do not have online banking credentials, you can send the transcript to puro.laurea@laurea.fi. If the transcript includes your personal identity number, send the message encrypted (in Outlook, on the “Options” tab click “Encrypt”—this will encrypt the message so that only the selected recipient can open it). If you cannot download an electronic transcript yourself from the organizing university’s system, you can request a transcript from that university’s study affairs office.
