Statutory accident insurance

All students are covered by statutory accident insurance. The statutory accident insurance covers accidents that occur in Finland and abroad during practical training and unpaid work placements organised in accordance with the curriculum.

Get travel insurance for student exchange

Laurea’s insurance does not cover baggage, leisure time or illness, so students going on exchange or on placements should also take out travel insurance as additional coverage. Travel insurance covers accidents and illnesses occurring during leisure time, as well as repatriation, trip cancellation and interruption.

Make sure that your insurance coverage is sufficient for the destination country. When taking out insurance, it is a good idea to mention the destination country and any other countries you plan to visit during the exchange. You must also take out travel insurance yourself for study trips.

Group insurance

The group insurance covers accidents that occur to a student during theory lessons, physical education classes and journeys to and from school. It also covers accidents occurring while the student participates in joint events organised as part of the curriculum and the direct journeys home related to these events. The insurances do not cover property damage alone. The institution does not compensate for lost items. You should consider taking out home insurance. In cases covered by the group insurance, the student first pays the medical and other expenses themselves and then claims compensation from the insurance company with a damage report.

Members of Laureamk receive a discount on If Group’s insurance products with the SAMOK student card.

What to do in case of an accident

If the accident is acute
  • If the accident requires an immediate visit to a doctor, go to a doctor and pay the costs yourself; keep the receipt for the payment.
  • Contact Study Services and report the accident.
  • Study Services will help you submit the damage report and forward it to the insurance company. The damage report should include the receipt from the doctor. You will need Laurea’s business ID (Y-tunnus) to make the report, which is: 1046216-1.
  • The insurance company will send you a decision regarding compensation by mail.
In non-acute cases
  • If the accident does not require an immediate visit to a doctor, first contact Study Services to obtain an insurance certificate (for damages covered by If insurance). This way you do not have to pay medical expenses yourself.
  • Student services will assist you in making the damage report.
  • The insurance company will send you a decision regarding compensation by mail.
If the accident occurs on a study trip, during a student exchange or on a training trip related to the curriculum (more than 50 km away)

You can choose the healthcare provider abroad yourself and present the travel insurance certificate there. Generally, abroad healthcare providers accept the travel insurance certificate and invoice If directly.

If you have to pay the bill yourself, claim the costs with the damage report or report the costs by phone afterwards. For more extensive examinations or treatments, healthcare providers may require a guarantee of payment.

Contact If’s travel emergency service (open 24/7) if you need a guarantee of payment or if it is an emergency. The travel emergency service provides assistance in Finnish, Swedish and English. Phone number +358 10 19 19 99.
