Health assessment for placement

An assessment on student’s vaccination protection and tuberculosis risk is required for placement in the social field and health care sector. Take care of the necessary health assessment well in advance of the start of the placement.

Before each of your healthcare placement periods, you must have an up-to-date health assessment. A health assessment is also required in many other social and healthcare placements. Check the Jobiili placement announcement or contact your placement provider directly to find out whether a health assessment is required.

If a health assessment is required and you do not have one, your placement will be cancelled. This requirement is based on the Communicable Diseases Act, specifically Section 48 concerning vaccinations and Section 55 concerning tuberculosis.

The health assessment is completed by filling in a Communicable Disease Survey. If your vaccination protection needs updating, you belong to a tuberculosis risk group, or there is uncertainty about your situation, contact the student healthcare services of the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS/YTHS).

If you are going to a placement at HUS, complete the HUS Communicable Disease Survey found on HUS pages.

If you are going to a placement elsewhere, complete the FSHS Communicable Disease Questionnaire found on FSHS pages.

Make sure that you have all the vaccinations required for your placement. Students in social and healthcare placements must be protected against, among other diseases, influenza, measles, and chickenpox. Protection against whooping cough is required for duties involving regular care of children under one year of age.

Do this:

  • Check your own vaccination records
  • Enter the information yourself on the communicable disease questionnaire form
  • If your vaccination protection is incomplete, contact the FSHS at least 2 months before the start of the placement to get vaccinated.
  • Also see Laurea’s instructions in the Workseed placement learning environment under ‘Prepare for practice’.

All social and healthcare students must complete the FSHS or HUS Communicable Disease Survey before each practical training period. Based on your responses, an assessment will be made as to whether you need a tuberculosis screening.

Do this:

  • Complete the same FSHS or HUS Communicable Disease Survey that is available in the vaccination section.
  • If you do not belong to a tuberculosis risk group: Sign the survey and submit it according to the placement’s instructions.
  • If you belong to a tuberculosis risk group: Check the risk group criteria before contacting FSHS. A person may belong to a risk group if they were born in a country with a high incidence of tuberculosis, have stayed in a risk area for an extended period, or have been in close contact with a person diagnosed with tuberculosis.
  • Contact FSHS at least two months before the start of your placement if a tuberculosis screening is required. The screening may include a chest X-ray.
  • Check the Jobiili placement announcement or ask your placement organization how and when the documents must be submitted.
  • In most cases, it is sufficient to bring the health assessment with you on your first day of placement. However, for example, the Vantaa and Kerava Wellbeing Services County (VAKE) requires students to present the health assessment form to their supervisor two weeks before the placement begins.
  • As the health assessment contains your personal health information, it should only be reviewed by the supervisor at your placement organization.
  • If you send your health assessment by email, always use a secure email service.
