Right to be absent during the first year

Are you about to start your studies but unable to begin right away? There are legal restrictions on taking a leave of absence during your first academic year. You can register as absent for your first academic year only for specific reasons outlined on this page.

To have an absence approved, you must submit the necessary certificates for the reason for your absence to Laurea. Submit the documents preferably via the e-form at the end of this page. Documents may be in Finnish, Swedish or English.

Please note that if you register as absent but do not provide the required certificates by the deadline, you will be registered as a present student and any requirements for tuition fees apply.

If the reason for the absence concerns only one semester, for example Finnish military service beginning in the spring or parental leave, you may choose to register as absent for either that semester or for the entire academic year. A spring semester present registration can also later be changed to an absence registration within the enrolment period.

Those who received a study place in the autumn joint application register for the spring semester only when accepting the study place. In that case, the first-year right to be absent applies only to the spring semester.

If you decide to postpone the start of your studies due to absence, please note that the same programme or mode of study (full-time daytime studies or multi-modal studies) may not necessarily begin again in the same way as when you were originally admitted as a student.

Laurea’s Student services send a questionnaire regarding registration for the next academic year twice a year to those registered as absent (in April and November).
