Online exams

A written or oral examination is one way to demonstrate competence. An online examination may include essay and multiple-choice questions, an oral presentation, or, for example, a video assignment. An online examination can be taken individually and/or in groups, and it is usually conducted in Canvas.

Proctored online exam

The exam is taken on your own computer in the Canvas learning platform and is proctored, if necessary, via a Zoom/Teams video call. During the exam the teacher monitors all participating students via video. During the exam participants may also be divided into breakout rooms (e.g. group exams). This means you will see other students’ video and they will see your video. Please ensure that you are in a quiet place without interruptions and that there is nothing in your camera view that you would not want the teacher or other students to see. Please note that you may take the exam at a location of your choice and, if necessary, you can also reserve a room at Laurea campuses to take the exam.

Detailed exam instructions are available in the course’s Canvas workspace.

Automated exam proctoring

Laurea uses, in limited situations, the Proctorio exam proctoring software in connection with Canvas. Proctorio is used in situations where the grounds for proctoring are particularly strong, such as medication calculation exams and written Swedish proficiency exams.

Proctorio is a browser extension that enables the automated proctoring of exams taken in Canvas. The aim is to allow exams to be taken flexibly without being tied to a specific time or place.

When Proctorio is enabled for a Canvas exam, it records the aspects of the student’s exam session selected by the teacher, for example the webcam image and audio as well as the student’s desktop view. In addition, the teacher can restrict students’ actions during the exam, for example by preventing visits to other websites, disabling clipboard use or printing. After the exam, Proctorio compiles a report for the teacher about any detected irregularities. However, any decisions regarding suspected cheating or ambiguities are always made by the teacher, not by the proctoring software. The teacher also has the possibility to review recordings of the entire exam session as part of the exam proctoring.
