The scope of the nursing degree is 210 credits, part of which is carried out as competence-promoting placement. The curriculum includes 75 credits of placement; additionally, the 15-credit thesis is included in the placement credits.

Purpose of the placement

The purpose of the placement is to support the development of a professional identity in accordance with the qualification to be completed. Furthermore, its purpose is to deepen theoretical knowledge so that the student’s nursing competence develops to meet the general professional competence requirements, which are in line with EU directives.

The general objectives of the placement are the objectives stated in the curriculum, which in each placement period are constructed as competence objectives.

Individual objectives are constructed by the student taking into account their own background and interests. Based on these, the student constructs competence-based objectives for the placement together with their supervisor and the supervising teacher, which are in harmony with the student’s stage of education, personal interests, and the conditions of the placement site.

More detailed information on competence-promoting placement can be found in Workseed under the placement periods and in the Placement pathway and instructions for placements.

Selection of placement

When selecting a placement, the student is guided to choose a placement that fits the student’s career plan and the objectives of the study module. Placements can be reserved from any units in Finland that provide health services. Placements are primarily reserved from Jobiili. All placements must have either a continuous or a fixed-term agreement.

Placement agreements and insurance

All Laurea students are insured for the duration of their placement. For placements reserved via Jobiili, the insurances are in order. If the placement is reserved outside Jobiili, the teacher responsible for placement guidance ensures that an agreement is drawn up between the placement provider and Laurea if needed.

Every placement is recorded in the PRM portal. Remember to mark completed placements as finished.

Assessment of placements

Placement periods are assessed on a pass/fail basis. During the placement, the student receives feedback from their supervisor aimed at supporting and guiding the student toward the objectives. The purpose of supervision discussions is to provide developmental feedback that helps achieve the set learning objectives. The supervising teacher ensures at the start of the placement that the student’s objectives are appropriate and, if necessary, asks for them to be completed. Interim and final evaluations are carried out face-to-face or using remote guidance tools. The assessment aims to evaluate the student’s professional development during the period and the integration of knowledge and skills into nursing competence.

Recognition of paid work as studies (TOPI) and international exchange

Competence-promoting placement in social services and health care can be carried out as work as a substitute for a nurse or public health nurse, with the paid work recognised as studies in accordance with the TOPI process at the final stage of studies. Placement periods can also be completed abroad in various nursing care environments (cf. international exchange).
