Nursing

  • Study group code: SNV226SN

Recognizing Prior Learning as Part of your Studies (RPL)

If you have any previous higher education studies that you want to recognize as part of your Nursing degree, you need to first apply for the recognition.

First, you will need to look up the Laurea Nursing curriculum starting in autumn 2026, where the goals and content of each study unit is described. Then compare them to your prior higher education studies in university or university of applied sciences and consider which Laurea nursing study units have the same or similar goals and content. Then write a short explanation or description of competence, how you have accomplished the required skills and knowledge. You need to do this for every study unit you want to have recognized. Please compile them into one word-document.

You also need to attach a clear copy of the certificates/transcripts of your prior higher education studies. The documents need to be in Finnish or in English. If they are not issued in Finnish or English, they must be officially translated to English, so we can also compare the study units and courses. Also, pay attention to the amount of study credits that you have completed. You are obliged to demonstrate the comparability of your earlier studies completed abroad with the Finnish education system. In Laurea UAS we calculate, that 1 credit (ECTS) = 27 hours of student’s work.

Your recognition of prior learning document together with your higher education transcripts should be sent by e-mail to the tutor teachers Pamela Linna and Ilari Ernamo (pamela.linna@laurea.fi; ilari.ernamo@laurea.fi) and the Head of the Students’ affairs Riikka Mulder (riikka.mulder@laurea.fi) a week before your studies begin. This way the tutors will have time to read the documents and compare your prior studies to the current Laurea Nursing study units.

Participants have to bring their higher education certificates and diplomas and their suggestion, what studies to recognize. The workshop is not meant for previous licenced practical nurse studies, which will be discussed during orientation days. At the workshop, we can make a personalized study plan (PSP) for students.

Before your studies begin, there will be an RPL-workshop for new Nursing students at the Laurea Tikkurila campus on 26th August 2026 at 9am -12:30 in room B301. We expect all students, who want to have prior higher education studies recognized, to come with their higher education certificates and diplomas and their suggestion, what studies to recognize. The workshop is not for Licenced practical nurse studies, which will be discussed during the orientation days. At the workshop we can make a personalized study plan (PSP) for students.

  • Starting date: 31.08.2026 at 9:00 am
  • Address: Ratatie 22, 01300 Vantaa
  • Study group code: SWV226SA

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

Before actually starting your studies, you should take a moment to consider if you might already have some competence that matches the learning outcomes for which your degree aims. See the objectives of your degree programme in the curriculum 2026-2027 and compare those to your current competences.

Your earlier competences can be taken into account in the following ways:

  • Competences which are equivalent to the degree requirements can be recognized as part of the core competence studies.
  • Any other higher education level competences, which do not match the degree requirements, can be included in the complementary competence studies if you wish.

As you start your studies, you will have an opportunity to discuss these questions with the guidance specialists at your campus. You are advised to apply for the recognition of compulsory studies at the beginning of your studies, because it might shorten your study time.

Each student has a named tutor teacher, and for the Social Services students starting studies in autumn 2026, the tutor teachers are Lloyd Bethell and Satu Bethell. The Head of Students’ Affairs is Ms. Riikka Mulder. Together the tutor teachers and the head of students’ affairs plan and decide which prior studies the student can have recognized. However, prior to this the student must request for the recognition. Here are the instructions, how that is done.

You will need to look up the Laurea UAS, Degree Programme in Social Services curriculum starting autumn 2026. There you can see the goals and content of each study unit. Therefore, what you need to do, is look through your prior studies in university or university of applied sciences and consider which Laurea Social Services study units have the same or similar goals and content. Then write a short explanation or description of competence, how you have accomplished the required skills and knowledge. You need to do this for every study unit you want to have recognized. Please compile them into one word-document.

You also need to attach a clear copy of the certificates/transcripts of your prior studies. The documents need to be in Finnish or in English. If they are not issued in Finnish or English, they must be officially translated to English, so we can also compare the study units and courses. Also, pay attention to the study credits that you have completed before vs. how many study credits the study unit or part of a study unit is in Laurea. You are obliged to demonstrate the comparability of your earlier studies completed abroad with the Finnish education ‎system. In Laurea UAS we calculate, that 1 credit (ECTS) = 27 hours of student’s work.

An RPL-workshop for new Social Services students at Laurea Tikkurila campus will be held during the orientation days.  We expect all students, who want to have prior studies recognized, to study the curriculum beforehand.  If you find studies that could be recognised, you should bring all related higher education certificates and diplomas to the workshop. Your suggestions for recognition will be discussed at the workshop and a personalized study plan (PSP) will be created accordingly.

Student tutors are here to help you

Student tutors are involved at the beginning of new students’ studies and create, among other things, social media tutoring groups for new students. Through the group you will receive additional information and instructions, you can ask questions and discuss, and get to know your future fellow students.
