Entrepreneurship

The entrepreneurship theme cuts across research programmes, offering solutions for entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial activities, and the development of companies’ business operations.

Entrepreneurship as an alternative to employment

Working life is changing rapidly and becoming increasingly complex. Both individuals and companies face new kinds of challenges amid various crises, rising prices, technological advances, the green transition, labour shortages and changes in the operating environment.

Manifestations of this change include various short-term and project-based jobs, whose availability is realized, among other ways, through the platform economy. Globally, self-employment has become commonplace; many people do not even pursue long-term employment relationships or hold only one job at a time. This phenomenon is expected to strengthen in the future. It has been predicted that in the 2030s, 60 percent of the Finnish workforce will operate as entrepreneurs or freelancers. To succeed, each of us should understand the basics of entrepreneurship. At minimum, we should be able to price and commercialize our expertise — and manage ourselves while not neglecting wellbeing and endurance at work.

We want to help develop working life in a more sustainable direction.
