Project Background

Ingredients used in medicines and cosmetics place a growing burden on the environment and accumulate in wastewater. Some synthetic substances degrade slowly and increase risks such as antimicrobial resistance. Companies need sustainable, functional alternatives and practical ways to assess and demonstrate the environmental impacts of their products.

Project Objectives

The project aims to develop new bio-based raw materials and make use of their bioactive properties. It seeks to ensure the environmental sustainability of products across their entire life cycle and to support companies in meeting regulatory and reporting requirements. At the same time, the project builds new cooperation and business opportunities.

Project Activities

  • Identify environmentally harmful ingredients used in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries
  • Produce raw materials from algae, fungal mycelium, plants, and industrial side streams
  • Test the bioactive and antimicrobial properties of the materials
  • Develop and pilot new product formulations
  • Pilot a life cycle assessment (LCA) tool for company use
  • Publish results openly and build a network of companies and experts

Laurea University of Applied Sciences develops and studies the use of functional ingredients in cosmetic products. At Laurea, we extract and analyse raw materials derived from side streams and utilise them in cosmetic product development in a resource‑efficient way.

Within the project, we develop cream, gel and hair care bases in which synthetic polymers are replaced with natural polymers. In addition, we evaluate the multifunctional properties of the ingredients and the usability of the products in collaboration with partners and companies.
