SERkut – Improving WEEE circulation with new operating models

The project SERkut – Improving WEEE circulation with new operating models developed circular economy solutions for waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in the Helsinki metropolitan area in collaboration with the City of Helsinki and companies. The goal of the project was to create a replicable model that promotes reuse of materials, reduces emissions, and support new business opportunities and employment.

Project goals

The project SERkut – Improving WEEE circulation with new operating models focused on developing new solutions for the recycling and reuse of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in the Helsinki metropolitan area. The aim was to improve the flow of discarded machinery and devices, particularly from public city organizations such as the City of Helsinki, and to create an ecosystem-based collaboration model that supports the emergence of new businesses, services, and employment opportunities.

Laurea University of Applied Sciences played a key role in the project by coordinating regional development and co-creation activities. These included mapping current recycling processes, organizing workshops, producing background studies, and compiling the results into a publication that can be used by other municipalities and international partners. Laurea also ran a business acceleration process where new product and service concepts based on WEEE materials were developed in collaboration with companies and students. In addition, Laurea was responsible for the project’s evaluation and contributed to its communication and dissemination.
