Assessment rubrics to support teachers’ work

As a tool to support the assessment of student’s competence, Laurea has produced assessment framework templates for different types of assignments. They make the teacher’s assessment work easier and more transparent. For students, receiving the assessment rubrics together with the assignment instructions shows them what they are expected to achieve in the assignment and how the different assessment criteria relate to one another. The rubrics clarify the learning objectives and give further information on what is expected from the assignment and what is valued.

The assessment rubrics are based on Laurea’s assessment guidelines and on the descriptions of competence levels for each grade (bachelor level). They take into account the different ways students can demonstrate their competence (essay, development project report, student self-assessment, learning journal, acting as opponent, participation in group work, short essay-type answers, oral presentation, online discussion, and peer assessment). Teachers may adapt the rubrics to suit the specific assignment and the learning objectives of the course and assignment.

The rubrics are available, ready to use, on Laurea’s Canvas learning platform in both Finnish and English. You can also find links to them at the end of this page.

The rubrics were developed by a multidisciplinary team of Laurea teachers and pedagogical experts: Anssi Mattila, Tuija Marstio, Mervi Niemelä, Pirjo Pohjasniemi and Pirjo Tiirikainen. They are based on the views of various stakeholders at Laurea as well as on the literature on the subject.
