WeCircle – Sustainable Growth from Circular Economy

The WeCircle project supports small and medium-sized enterprises in the Porvoo economic area in transitioning to the circular economy. The aim is to identify new business opportunities, make use of industrial side streams, and support sustainable regional growth.

Project background

Production and consumption place a heavy burden on the environment, and companies need concrete ways to move towards more sustainable practices. In Uusimaa, large amounts of industrial side streams and waste are generated but not yet fully utilised. The project was launched to help industrial SMEs recognise circular economy opportunities and connect with the transformation of the Kilpilahti industrial area.

Project objectives

  • Strengthen competence in the circular economy and the green transition.
  • Help identify new business opportunities based on industrial needs.
  • Connect the future needs of key regional companies with solutions offered by SMEs.
  • Support the transition of the industrial area towards more sustainable operating models.
  • Support the carbon neutrality goals of Porvoo and the Uusimaa region.
  • Build Uusimaa into a leading region in the circular economy.

Project activities

  • Organised workshops and learning programmes on the circular economy for SMEs.
  • Mapped the future needs of key companies in the Kilpilahti area.
  • Connected SMEs with industrial actors to identify new solutions.
  • Implemented concrete circular economy pilots in 4–5 companies.
  • Developed a regional development roadmap and a shared operating model.
  • Communicated circular economy opportunities in Porvoo and across Uusimaa.

Project results and outputs

  • SMEs strengthened their circular economy expertise.
  • Companies launched concrete circular economy solutions.
  • Cooperation between Kilpilahti and SMEs was strengthened.
  • A shared model for developing the circular economy was created for the region.
  • The role of the circular economy in strengthening vitality in Porvoo and Uusimaa became clearer.
