CargoRes – Sustainable Handling of Cargo Residues

Project background

The Baltic Sea is one of the world’s most sensitive marine environments and is affected by eutrophication and pollution. During cargo loading, unloading and cleaning operations, cargo residues can enter the sea directly or be washed into the water from quays, ship decks and cargo holds. Even substances that are not classified as harmful to the marine environment can still have negative impacts on the ecosystem.

Current practices for preventing cargo losses and managing cargo residues vary between ports and shipping companies, and existing regulations do not fully address the problem. CargoRes was created to identify, test and promote practical measures that reduce cargo losses and prevent residues from reaching the Baltic Sea. By bringing together ports, shipping companies, authorities and environmental experts across the region, the project supports cleaner maritime operations and a healthier Baltic Sea.
