Welcome to Laurea

Orientation days

Your studies begin with the orientation days during which you will get an overall understanding of the Laurea learning environment: the study contents, the methods used and the IT infrastructure.

You will meet your personal tutor teacher as well as the tutor students who are there to help you during your Laurea studies. In addition, you will become familiar with the campus services, for example the student restaurant, nurse and the psychologist. Laureamko, the student union, will introduce the services offered for new students.

After the orientation days your studies at Laurea will follow the normal study schedule.

Students are expected to arrive on the first day of studies and participate in the orientation days. The final deadline to begin studies will be stated later. If you arrive late, please be aware that gathering study credits for the autumn semester is not possible after a given deadline.

Activate User Account

Remember to activate your user account before your studies begin. You can activate it five days before your studies begin. Kindly note that you will need a personal Finnish Bank user ID. If you do not have a Finnish Bank user ID you need to pick up your user information from the student affairs office. More information available at the Laurea User Account page.

Recognizing Prior Learning as Part of your Studies (RPL)

Before actually starting your studies, you should take a moment to consider if you might already have some competence that matches the learning outcomes for which your degree aims. See the objectives of your degree programme in the curriculum and compare those to your current competences.

Your earlier competences can be taken into account in the following ways :

  • Competences which are equivalent to the degree requirements can be recognized as part of the core competence studies
  • Any other higher education level competences which do not match the degree requirements, can be included in the complementary competence studies if you wish.

As you start your studies, you will have an opportunity to discuss these questions with the guidance specialists at your campus.
You are advised to apply for the recognition of compulsory studies at the beginning of your studies because it might shorten your study time. Instructions concerning the application process can be found in Laurea's intranet (Laurea LINK), which will be able to access once you start studying. At this point, it is good to know that you will need documents and some other proof or demonstration of your competences for the process. Please also note that you are obliged to demonstrate the comparability of your earlier studies completed abroad with the Finnish education ‎system.

Each student has a named tutor teacher, and for the nursing students starting studies in August 2019, the tutor teacher is Senior Lecturer Riikka Mulder. Laurea UAS also has Head of Students’ Affairs Ms. Tanja Tamminen. Together the tutor teacher Riikka and head of students’ affairs Tanja plan and decide which prior studies the student can have recognized. However, prior to this the student must request for recognition. Here are the instructions, how that is done.

You will need to look up the Laurea UAS, Degree Programme in Nursing curricula starting autumn 2019. There you can see the goals and content of each study unit. Therefore, what you need to do, is look through your prior studies in university or university of applied sciences, and consider which Laurea nursing courses (study units) have the same or similar goals and content. Then write a short explanation or description of competence, how you have accomplish the required skills and knowledge. You need to do this for every study unit you want to have recognized. You can make it on one word-document.

You also need to scan or take a photo of the record / certificate of your prior studies, so we can also compare the study units and courses. Also, pay attention to the study credits that you have done before vs. how many study credits the course or part of a course is in Laurea. In Laurea UAS we calculate, that 1cr = 27 hours of student’s work.

The recognition of prior learning letters should be sent by e-mail to and by 12.8.2019. This way Tanja and the Riikka will have time to read the letters and compare the applications and prior studies to current Laurea nursing courses.

On 20.8.2019 at 12.30 – 15.00, we have a RPL-workshop, where we expect all students, who want to have prior studies recognized, to come with their school certificates and diplomas and their suggestion, what to studies to recognize. There we can make a personalized study plan (PSP) for students.
