Recognizing Prior Learning as Part of your Studies (RPL)

Before actually starting your studies, you should take a moment to consider if you might already have some competence that matches the learning outcomes for which your degree aims. See the objectives of your degree programme in the curriculum and compare those to your current competences.

Your earlier competences can be taken into account in the following ways :

  • Competences which are equivalent to the degree requirements can be recognized as part of the core competence studies
  • Any other higher education level competences which do not match the degree requirements, can be included in the complementary competence studies if you wish.

Each student has a named tutor teacher, and for the nursing students starting studies in August 2021, the tutor teachers are Senior Lecturers Emma Tamankag and Kati Saarinen. The Head of Student Affairs is Ms. Mari Koski. Together the tutor teachers and the Head of Student Affairs Mari plan and decide which prior studies the student can have recognized. However, prior to this the student must request for recognition. Here are the instructions, how that is done.

You will need to look up the Laurea UAS, Degree Programme in Nursing curricula starting autumn 2021. There you can see the goals and content of each study unit. Therefore, what you need to do, is look through your prior studies in university or university of applied sciences, and consider which Laurea nursing courses (study units) have the same or similar goals and content. Then write a short explanation or description of competence, how you have accomplish the required skills and knowledge. You need to do this for every study unit you want to have recognized. You can make it on one word-document.

You also need to scan or take a clear photo of the record / certificate of your prior studies (the documents need to be in English/officially translated if so needed), so we can also compare the study units and courses. Also, pay attention to the study credits that you have done before vs. how many study credits the course or part of a course is in Laurea. In Laurea UAS we calculate, that 1cr (ECTS)  = 27 hours of student’s work.

The recognition of prior learning letters together with the higher education transcripts should be sent by e-mail to the tutor teachers Emma and Kati ( emmaculate.tamankag(a); kati.saarinen(a) )  and the Head of the Student Affairs Mari ( mari.koski(a) )  by  9th August 2021. This way the tutors will have time to read the letters and compare the applications and prior studies to current Laurea nursing courses.

On 17th August 2021 at 12.30 pm there will be a RPL-workshop at Laurea Tikkurila campus.  We expect all students, who want to have prior studies recognized, to come with their higher education certificates and diplomas and their suggestion, what to studies to recognize. There we can make a personalized study plan (PSP) for students.

Your Student Union: Laureamko

Laureamko brings the student's point of view to Laurea's decision making. Laureamko has plenty of actors at every campus who work for you, in particular. Furthermore, Laureamko also offers web services, the Laureamko Shop is an online shop for the Students and Laureamko chat supports you in any matters related to studies.

Laureamko arranges many different events, such as visits (for example to Fazer), parties, bowling and board game nights and many other things that supports solidarity. You will find more information on the Laureamko pages, from Facebook and Instagram.

HOAS, the Foundation for Student Housing in the Helsinki Region, provides student housing predominantly in the Helsinki metropolitan area. To qualify for housing, the tenant must be a full-time degree student, be entitled to financial aid and their place of study must be located in the Helsinki metropolitan area (Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen). Students can submit housing applications on the HOAS website.

Additionally, you can contact the actors responsible for each city's rental housing. It is also a good idea to look at what's available in the private rental market.
