UkraineDigiTrans project: Ukrainian teachers prepare to share digital education lessons back home
A UkraineDigiTrans workshop brought together teachers from Ukrainian universities in Laurea to develop digital learning.

Laurea University of Applied Sciences launched the Digital Transformation for Medical Education in Ukraine (UkraineDigiTrans) project at the end of last year to develop online medical education in Ukraine.
Coordinated by Laurea and funded by the EU Erasmus+ programme, the project aims to support Ukrainian medical universities in their digital transformation. The aim is to develop innovative digital solutions for medical education that support e-learning in a war context.
The project involves four Ukrainian universities, one Greek university and the Ukrainian State Agency for Quality Assurance of University Education.
Topics included artificial intelligence, resilience and micro-learning
In early April, the project participants gathered at Laurea's Tikkurila campus for a five-day workshop. Twenty teachers from Ukrainian universities participated.
The workshop programme was based on a needs assessment carried out earlier in the year for teachers and students. During the workshop week, teachers worked on pedagogical scripts, used the organisational resilience mapping tool, learned about micro-learning, flipped learning and the use of AI in teaching and learning, among other things, under the guidance of teachers and experts from the Laurea.
- It was a great pleasure to attend the week of workshops dedicated to the enhancement of digital learning at Laurea. We particularly enjoyed the presentation of cutting-edge developments in methodology (ABC-method, AI tools, micro-courses and micro-components), describes Associate Professor Oryslava Bryska from Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.
- Every topic we covered was interesting, relevant, and practical, but I also appreciated that we got to apply it in practice during the training, adds Kateryna Nitochko, Associate Professor from the Odessa National Medical University.
Change agents for digitalisation
Later this year, the project will organise two more workshops: Thessaloniki in June and again in Laurea in the autumn. After each workshop, the participants will organise a training session for their teacher colleagues at their respective universities on the topics covered in the workshops.
- The Ukrainian teacher trainers charmed us Laureans with their receptive and knowledgeable attitude. They clearly saw their role as change agents for digitalisation at their university, says project director Tuija Marstio from Laurea.
The participants of the workshop also see the importance of their role in the development of digitalisation in their home country:
- A key takeaway from this week at Laurea was the recognition of the critical role that resilience and equality play in digital education, says professor Oksana Vygovska from Bogomolets National Medical University.
- In times of crisis, such as the ongoing full-scale war, medical education institutions need to be flexible, digitalized, and prepared for rapid changes and challenges to maintain a high-quality educational process for future medical professionals, adds Iryna Popova, Associate Professor from Bukovinian State Medical University.
