A New Library Pool – Haaga-Helia, Laurea and Metropolia in Joint Systems
The libraries at Haaga-Helia, Laurea and Metropolia (3UAS) now provide their printed book collections and other services to students and staff through a joint library card and system. The joint customer register and collection catalogue facilitate learning across the 3UAS.
One of the reasons for the joint catalogue is the cross-study possibilities between Haaga-Helia, Laurea and Metropolia UASs. Students from the other 3UAS can enroll in certain courses and study paths. Cooperation between the libraries provides access to a comprehensive and well-rounded printed book collection. The collection consists of 350 000 printed books and focuses on up-to-date professional publications and the fields of studies offered at the 3UAS.
Secondly, the 3UAS libraries are already used by many of the students when searching for the most reserved study material. A student would ordinarily need three or more library cards when trying to find the required text books. The joint library card, catalogue and customer register make library services easy to use.
Books can be reserved from any of the 3UAS libraries to be transported to any other campus library for free. Students’ everyday life will be easier when the needed book material can be transferred to the campus that is most convenient for them. There are 15 3UAS campus libraries in Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Hyvinkää, Porvoo, Lohja and Vierumäki. Although the 3UAS libraries have integrated their services, the libraries remain independent.
Almost 25% of the UASs’ students in Finland study at Haaga-Helia, Laurea or Metropolia, totalling around 35 000 students. UAS libraries are free to use by anyone in improving one’s professional knowledge, so the close-knit cooperation benefits the inhabitants of the region too.
