Video production

Videos can be created in many different ways. With today’s devices, video production is easy and does not require any special expertise.

Video production process

Videos should be made as short and concise as possible. In videos it is important to try to capture the viewer’s interest and keep it engaged throughout the whole video. A good video has a clear beginning, middle and end.

Plan

  • Think carefully about the video’s main storyline. For example, how will you tell something in 1.5 minutes?
  • Plan before filming, write a script. Download a script template here.
  • Content over quality
  • If you are staff, review the publication point criteria and send the video’s script in advance to the Publication Services (julkaisut@laurea.fi). Once you receive approval, you may proceed.
  • Choose a quiet location that suits the video
  • Prepare your recording equipment (phone, tablet, microphone, camera)
  • Do you need other equipment (tripod, lights) or people to help?
  • Rehearse your presentation before filming

Record

  • Check your recording equipment (battery, storage space, general device recording functions)
  • Keep the plan with you while filming
  • It is better to record more than too little
  • If necessary, make a performer agreement with the people appearing in the video.
  • Save the materials to your computer or a cloud service

Edit and publish

  • Review the footage you filmed
  • Import the material you will use into your editing software
  • Cut out all unnecessary and failed parts and leave only the essential
  • Add sound effects and music if desired, for example as a short jingle.
  • You can source sound effects, for example, from YLE or Papunet.
  • You can find CC-licensed music, for example, here. Make sure you have the rights to use the music.
  • Add titles and credits if necessary
  • Export/save the video from the program to your computer or device
  • Check accessibility
  • Subtitling
  • Upload the video to a service, e.g. video.laurea.fi
  • If you want the video on Laurea’s YouTube channel or other Laurea publication channels, fill in the video material publication permission.
  • When the video is published, make a notification in the Justus service.

Videos must be subtitled in accordance with the Accessibility Act

Videos uploaded to web services must be accessible from 23.9.2020 onwards. The requirements apply only to videos published on or after 23.9.2020, not to videos published earlier, which may remain on the web service.

Subtitles are essential for people with hearing impairments, but subtitles benefit everyone. Audio in videos is not always audible because of background noise, and sometimes the audio quality is so poor that subtitles are needed. Subtitles are also useful when the audio level cannot be increased and headphones are not available.

Subtitling means that a Finnish-language video has Finnish subtitles of the content the viewer hears. In addition to speech, sounds that are important for understanding but whose cause is not visible should be subtitled. For example, if a video shows an interior and a knock is heard at the door, the subtitle should describe it: [A knock on the door.]

Subtitle the video using the available software:
