Tausta

MANOLO will deliver a complete stack of trustworthy algorithms and tools to help AI systems reach better efficiency and seamless optimisation in their operations, resources and data required to train, deploy and run high-quality and lighter AI models in both centralised and cloud-edge distributed environments. Laurea UAS leads the trustworthy evaluation and validation of the MANOLO use cases.

It will push the state of the art in the development of a collection of complementary algorithms for training, understanding, compressing and optimising machine learning models by advancing research in the areas of: model compression, meta-learning (few-shot learning), domain adaptation, frugal neural network search and growth and neuromorphic models. Novel dynamic algorithms for data/energy efficient and policy-compliant allocation of AI tasks to assets and resources in the cloud-edge continuum will be designed, allowing for trustworthy widespread deployment.

To support these activities, a data management framework for distributed tracking of assets and their provenance (data, models, algorithms) and a benchmark system to monitor, evaluate and compare new AI algorithms and model deployments will be developed. Trustworthiness evaluation mechanisms will be embedded at its core for explainability, robustness and security of models while using the Z-Inspection methodology for TrustworthyAI assessment, helping AI systems conform to the new AI Act regulation.

Tavoitteet

  1. Design a next-generation Hardware-aware in training optimisation for trustworthy, efficient AI
  2. Reduce environmental footprint, increasing trustworthiness and edge autonomy
  3. Introduce new business models for cloud-edge continuum AI software and hardware
  4. Deploy new guidelines for the implementation of trustworthy, efficient AI systems
  5. Develop open-source tools and benchmarks to promote excellence in ADRA communities.
  6. Integrate with Horizon Europe projects, platforms (e.g., AI-on-Demand), and networks (e.g., ADRA-e)

Manolo is aimed at the following stakeholders

  • Industry and technology providers: software and hardware companies that can build on MANOLO, plus businesses working with cloud, edge, and IoT (their developers, managers, and decision-makers such as CEOs, CTOs, and CIOs) that could adopt it, starting with the healthcare, manufacturing, and telecom sectors. This also includes ADRA networks such as CLAIRE, EurAI, euRobotics, ADRA-e, EDIHs and TEFs.
  • Academia and researchers: experts in AI, data, robotics, IoT and the cloud-to-edge continuum, and related EU-funded projects and platforms (AI-on-Demand, Horizon Cloud and others).
  • Policymakers and regulators: national and EU regulators, ministries and regional councils, and EU institutions and agencies.
  • Wider society: end-users, the general public, and open platforms for sharing data, lessons learnt and best practices.

Toimenpiteet

In the MANOLO project, we:

  • Map what end-users, technology providers and AI ethics experts need from trustworthy, efficient AI. We gather this through interviews, workshops, and an online survey, then turn it into MANOLO requirements and system design.
  • Develop hardware-aware AI algorithms that combine pruning, quantisation, knowledge distillation, meta-learning and neural architecture search. The goal is models at least three times smaller that cut training energy by more than 30% on at least four hardware platforms.
  • Build a trustworthy data-management framework that records where data, models, and algorithms come from and how they change. It detects biased or malicious data and creates compact, high-quality training datasets.
  • Optimise AI training, inference, and data across cloud and edge to reduce energy use.
  • Benchmark models on at least seven standard and neuromorphic hardware platforms in more than 150 experiments, measuring energy, accuracy, speed, explainability and robustness.
  • Embed trustworthiness and legal compliance from the start. We use the Z-Inspection® process, the EU Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI and the AI Act, Data Act and GDPR, with guidance from an Ethics Advisory Board.
  • Pilot the MANOLO toolset in four use cases across healthcare, manufacturing and telecommunications, on robots, wearables and smartphones. We stress-test it in the lab and then in realistic conditions.
  • Evaluate the use-case results against the original requirements, covering technical aspects (accuracy, energy, data handling, hardware performance) and non-technical ones (ethics, safety, trustworthiness).
  • Train developers, researchers, students, and other stakeholders in human oversight and trustworthy AI through workshops, a summer school, and hands-on sessions.
  • Publish open-source tools, benchmarks, public deliverables and peer-reviewed articles through Zenodo, GitHub and the AI-on-Demand platform.
  • Connect with other Horizon Europe and Digital Europe projects, ADRA networks and EU platforms to share knowledge and keep the results in use after the project ends.
  • Advise policymakers with evidence-based best practices for designing and deploying trustworthy, efficient AI, and with recommendations on how ethics and human rights can be built into policy.
