Creative Approach to Resilience and Bravery in Secondary Education

• The project produced a toolkit, consisting of 4 deep democracy tools adapted to the age and living environment of secondary school students; instructional videos clarifying the application of the tools in the classroom and a manual with wider background information. All material was distributed free of charge via the project website. Also an ebook was produced presenting the course of the entire project and a (digital) photo exhibition of the artistic part of this project.
• The CARB project generated concrete impact at local, regional, European and international levels. Locally, the project transformed classroom practices by equipping teachers with new tools for democratic dialogue, emotional wellbeing and creative facilitation.
• Teachers reported increased confidence, improved resilience and more inclusive classroom climates, while students became more engaged and empowered, particularly through the photography activities and exhibitions that amplified their voices within their own school communities.
• Local impact was especially visible in the photo exhibitions hosted in public venues such as Oodi Library in Helsinki, attracting an estimated 100 visitors per day duration of 12 weeks and making students’ perspectives accessible to a wide local audience.
• At the regional level, the project strengthened collaboration between schools, teacher-training institutions and partner organisations across Belgium, Italy, Finland and the UK. Regional dissemination activities, news articles, institutional website posts, and social-media updates, expanded the reach of the CARB tools and philosophy. For example, partner institutions integrated CARB materials into their own education programmes, including UCLL’s teachertraining curricula, ensuring continued regional uptake.
• At the European level, CARB fostered a shared methodology across four countries, producing a multilingual toolkit, videos and project book accessible in English, Finnish, Italian and Dutch. The transnational trainings, partnership meetings and co-creation activities strengthened cross-country alignment and built a lasting professional network among educators. Evaluation findings confirm that the collaboration enhanced partners’ competences and improved the quality of educational practices across national contexts.
• The international impact was significantly expanded through the associate partnership with Plan International Finland, which committed to adopting CARB’s Deep Democracy + photography tools in its global programmes. As PLAN operates in more than 80 countries, the CARB methodology now has the potential to reach thousands of children and practitioners worldwide. The dissemination report identifies this partnership as a major opportunity for global scaling, ensuring that CARB continues to influence youth work and human-rights education far beyond the project’s duration.
• Overall, the project generated strong, multi-layered impact: empowering teachers and students locally, strengthening professional networks regionally, harmonising innovative methodologies across Europe, and extending inclusive, creative pedagogical tools to a global audience.
• The project was selected for the publication in the Toolkit for school success which is a part of the European School Education Platform, an initiative of the European Commission. The Toolkit offers a collection of examples, resources and initiatives that promote inclusive education and tackle early school leaving. The Toolkit resources are selected and evaluated by an independent editorial board f experts.
