Background of the project

The UAS Moves project continues the work started in the 3AMK Moves project which launched a shared activity etiquette within the 3AMK alliance, created movement‑based pedagogical practices, and tested various movement pilots. The UAS Moves project continues to develop and promote a physically active higher education culture.

We are embedding the activity etiquette into the everyday life of higher education institutions through local Haaga‑Helia Moves and Laurea Moves plans, disseminating information about movement-centered pedagogy, and further developing movement mentor and movement agent activities through networks.

In addition, we develop collaborative models to increase students’ movement and physical activity through multiprofessional cooperation. The project strengthens learning, well-being, and a sense of community in universities of applied sciences, while also disseminating effective practices to their local operating environments.

The project is implemented in cooperation with Haaga‑Helia University of Applied Sciences. It is funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture (OKM) and is linked to the government programme “Get Finland Moving”. The aim of the programme is to increase physical activity among people of all ages by promoting opportunities for movement and everyday choices that support being active. The project cooperates with the Liikkuvat initiative, specifically the Study on the Move programme.

Objectives and Measures

Our goal is to use movement to develop higher education culture in ways that support learning, well-being, and communality. The AMK Moves project develops an active higher education culture with a focus on the following:

  • We implement the activity etiquette within the higher education community. This work is guided by the Haaga‑Helia Moves and Laurea Moves plans.
  • We disseminate the principles of movement-centered pedagogy throughout the higher education community and cooperation networks. We develop movement mentor and movement agent activities in a network-like manner and promote research, development, innovation, and learning (RDIL) from the perspective of movement-centered pedagogy.
  • We pilot a regional well-being mentoring service pathway in cooperation with the City of Vantaa and FSHS (Finnish Student Health Service). This pathway supports especially students who are physically inactive by strengthening their capabilities, opportunities, and motivation to make choices about physical activity that promote health and learning. We increase opportunities for community-based exercise and leisure activities to enhance students’ physical activity.

More information

Activity Etiquette

The activity etiquette is a co-developed guideline for the 3AMK higher education community on how to implement movement to everyday life. It guides and promotes learning, well-being, and communality within the higher education community.

The activity etiquette is a jointly built guideline for 3AMK higher education institutions on how movement is implemented in the everyday life of the university. Activity etiquette guides and promotes learning, well-being and communality in the 3AMK universities. Activity etiquette contains eight principles. The principles guide how movement can be implemented in teaching and the environment, as well as through the community and individuals, so that movement really becomes a part of our everyday lives. The activity etiquette consists of the following principles:

Teaching

  • We foster learning and boost creativity through movement.
  • We pace our daily work and studies and take regular breaks.

Environment

  • We make the most of various ways to stay active.
  • We are encouraged to make use of our surroundings in various ways.

Community

  • We encourage everyone to be physically active.
  • We take care of our alertness and energy.

Individual

  • We welcome ways to increase our physical activity.
  • We act as examples for others.
The image shows a poster titled 'Activity etiquette,' divided into four sections: Teaching, Environment, Community, and Individual. In Teaching, people are encouraged to foster learning and creativity through movement and take breaks in daily work and studies. In Environment, various ways to stay active and make use of surroundings are promoted. In Community, everyone is encouraged to be physically active and take care of alertness. In Individual, ways to increase physical activity and act as examples for others are welcomed.
Movement-centered Pedagogy

Movement-centered pedagogy is part of active pedagogy in which movement is used in teaching either in an integrated manner or as a tool. Movement refers comprehensively to all kinds of physical activity and movement. Movement enhances learning, promotes well-being, increases a sense of community, and makes teaching more versatile.
