Basic information

- Duration of studies: 210 ECTS, 3,5 years
You may work, for example, in safety, security and risk management planning, development and expert jobs in companies or as a consultant. You may also be employed at schools or companies as a trainer in the field or in a public authority position related to preparedness or public safety.

There is a clear demand for experts in the field, and as a Bachelor of Business Management specialising in safety, security and risk management you will have excellent opportunities for employment and career.
Programme content
Degree Programme in Safety, Security and Risk management includes core competencies of the Service Business Management programme. In order to be able to work as a safety, security and risk management specialist, you must learn and understand the basics of business, entrepreneurship, customer-driven service development, leadership, and the economy and business law.

- Business operations - 30 ECTS
- Service Business – 30 ECTS
- Expert in a Work Community – 30 ECTS, includes two work placements, 15 ECTS each
- Expert in Development and Workplace Innovation – 30 ECTS, including a Bachelor’s Thesis of 15 ECTS
Complementary competence
The complementary competencies provide the opportunity to deepen knowledge in:
Risk management – 20 ECTS
The objective of the studies is to understand risk, safety and security management, business continuity and environmental risk management compliance requirements and best practices. After completing the studies, you can assess and manage risks related to organisations comprehensively, business continuity and environment.
Corporate safety and security – 20 ECTS
You will gain an understanding of corporate and organisational safety and security compliance requirements and best practices, risk assessment, management, planning and development. After completing the studies, you can plan, assess and develop corporate safety and security as part of corporates' operations.
Preparedness in society – 20 ECTS
You will learn about international security, critical infrastructure protection and crime prevention phenomena, compliance requirements and best practices, risk assessment and management. After completing the studies, you can analyse global threats and plan, assess and develop critical infrastructure protection and crime prevention.
Complementary studies from Business Information Technology
After completion of specific preliminary studies, you may also study Cybersecurity- and Information Security studies offered by the Business Information Technology degree programme.
Studying in the Safety, Security and Risk Management Programme
Laurea provides the programme as an online-oriented blended learning. In blended learning, students have on average 3 days of contact lessons three times in a semester. In addition, studies are conducted independently, as group work, online and, where possible, in student's own workplace.
Organisations and companies are very interested in the skills of students in this programme. During your studies, you will have the opportunity to participate in many different projects and development assignments with external partners and companies. These projects may be related, for instance, to risk assessment in organisations, planning risk treatment methods, planning of safety and security or organizing safety and security training.

During your studies, you will have the opportunity to participate in various sponsored research projects with other students and Laurea staff. For example, students have participated in Laurea’s research projects related to crisis management and best practices in leadership. These projects have included studying the components of good leadership when comparing crisis management in a UN operation with business management in a listed company. During your safety, security and risk management studies, you can add several workplace and research projects to your CV, demonstrating your competence as a safety, security and risk management expert.
Tuition fees and grants
Non-EU/EEA area students who have been selected through the Finnish joint application for admission to degree programmes taught in English are charged tuition fees.
Tuition fee: €8000/ academic year for non EU/EEA students.
Grants are intended for students paying yearly tuition fee in accordance with the grant fund regulations. The grants are provided to students applying for them provided that the student has completed at least 60 credits of studies that count towards their degree programme in the previous academic year ending on 31st July. The size of any grant is to be at most equivalent to 10% of the yearly tuition fee.

Further studies
After working two years following the completion of your Bachelor’s degree, you can apply for the Master’s degree programme in security management at Laurea to further deepen your expertise. Your Bachelor of Business Administration degree gives you eligibility for studies at other higher education institutions, at which you can carry out further studies in fields such as business management or administration.
