The BIT degree programme, starting for the first time at Laurea, was designed as an online programme from the very beginning. The programme combines information technology and business management expertise in multiple ways. It is particularly suitable for students who want to study independently, efficiently and independent of time or place.

Online studies in an international environment provide students with important learning experience for their future career. The degree programme offers multiple study paths that are useful with respect to employment. Students can deepen their expertise in fields such as cybersecurity, digital marketing or web development.

The strengths of the programme

Work is becoming increasingly digital, and international cooperation on the web is becoming more and more important. The BIT online programme efficiently prepares students to respond to the challenges of the future workplace. The students learn the basics of information technology and become familiar with the most important systems. In addition to technical competence, studying in an international group promotes cooperation, interaction and communication skills, much valued by employers.

Students graduating from the BIT programme of Laurea, a high-quality university of applied sciences, also receive the valued BBA degree. Every teacher has the required pedagogic qualification, in addition to which they also have extensive workplace and online teaching experience.

Workplace collaboration has a very important role at Laurea, and the BIT programme was developed in close cooperation with our partners in the business world.

The content of the programme aims to develop the type of competence demanded by employers, which promotes employment opportunities for Laurea students. Laurea’s BIT programme is a combination of information technology and business management expertise.

In addition to a range of IT skills, the students learn to understand the basics of business as well as customer-centred development of digital services. This means that they can work in different roles in companies of the industry.

What are the studies like?

The online BIT degree programme is particularly suitable for students who, for reasons due to their job or situation in life, cannot attend ordinary daytime studies on Laurea campuses. The programme starts from the basics of information technology. The pace of the studies is planned so that students do not need preliminary special knowledge of information technology. What counts is the attitude as well as the ability to learn.

The programme is designed to take from three to three and a half years. However, it is possible to speed up the studies and graduate in two years. In addition, Laurea has flexible RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) procedures in place. This means that more experienced students can have certain studies or work experience recognised as prior learning and receive credits for it.

Students may be admitted to Laurea’s BIT programme from Finland, the EU, or anywhere in the world. All students enrolled in the programme must participate in a three-day programme launch on Laurea’s Espoo campus.

The programme includes compulsory basic studies, which cover the basics of information technology and business management. Later on, in-depth competence can be developed even through collaboration projects with business world partners.

Work placements and employment

The studies include 30 credits’ worth of practical training (approximately five months), which can be taken in one or two parts. The work placements are an important step towards employment, helping students to further enhance their competence in an area of their interest. A work placement can be taken in Finland, abroad or online.

The BIT programme provides students with a broad range of possibilities for employment. These include jobs requiring profound technical skills as well as jobs in which more general business expertise is required.

Laurea’s BIT students have found employment particularly in software development, data security, system management, digital service development, sales and marketing.

Entrance examination

The entrance examination for the BIT programme consists of a SAT test and a video session. The SAT test measures the applicant’s skill level in critical reading, mathematics and writing. The test is used for the evaluation of the student’s capacity for successful completion of studies in a higher education institution. All applicants to the BIT programme must take the SAT test; it is recommended to take this online test well in advance of the deadline.

The video is used for the assessment of the applicants’ motivation and their understanding of the field of study. On the video, the applicants explain why they would be a good BIT student and what they expect of their studies at Laurea.

Opportunities for further studies

After completing the Bachelor’s degree, students can apply for Master’s degree programmes in Finland and abroad.
