Laurea brought together the XiA consortium’s European experts to explore the future of digital healthcare
European experts advance health data interoperability and training.

Laurea University of Applied Sciences hosted the annual consortium meeting of the XiA (Xpanding Innovative Alliance) project at the Tikkurila campus on 29–30 September 2026 . The event brought together project partners from across Europe to advance the skills, training and cooperation required by the European Health Data Space (EHDS).
The meeting opened with a panel discussion aimed at Finland’s health data ecosystem, examining the impacts of the EHDS on organisations and the competencies they will need in the future. The event brought together perspectives from the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), Sitra, Finnish Health Technology Association (Terveysteknologia ry), universities and other stakeholders on how to practically strengthen wider secondary use of health data and the readiness of digital healthcare. The event was organised in cooperation with the project’s other Finnish project partner, Clinipower Oy.
The XiA project’s central objective is to develop educational solutions that particularly support the capacities of healthcare professionals, leaders responsible for system implementation, trainers and IT experts to use interoperable health data. The project will produce, among other things, microlearning content, courses and digital badges to address changing competency needs in digital healthcare. The learning materials can be used both in degree education and in continuous learning for target groups.
The collaborative space created by XiA is a significant step for cooperation in the field
During the meeting at Laurea, project partners focused in particular on producing educational content, piloting and implementing courses, and preparing practical testing. The meeting also continued development of the XiA project’s Community of Practice network. The network brings together European experts and organisations that participate in the evaluation, development and adoption of training materials.
The project is based on the premise that the implementation of the EHDS will not rely solely on legislation or technological solutions. Success requires skilled professionals who can apply new ways of working in healthcare, education, research and businesses. XiA responds to this need by building European learning pathways and strengthening collaboration between different actors.
The consortium meeting hosted by Laurea confirmed the project’s next phase, in which the emphasis shifts from planning increasingly toward the production, deployment and impact assessment of educational content. At the same time, it briefly placed Finland at the centre of the European discussion on EHDS education and interoperability expertise.
