Would you like to study flexibly or develop your skills, but feel that an entire degree would be a bit too much? MOOCs may be the answer you’ve been looking for. You can complete the courses online at your own pace, and there is no course fee.
Laurea offers a variety of MOOCs in different fields of study. You can select courses that support your existing skill set or are related to your field of education or your current job. Or why not experiment with courses in an entirely new field or take a course just for the joy of learning?
What does MOOC stand for?
The term MOOC has become established in recent years and refers to massive open online courses. The courses are free of charge, open to everyone and completed online independently. What does this mean in practice?
It’s easy to fit MOOCs into your schedule regardless of your life situation. The courses don’t have scheduled teaching sessions or assignment deadlines, so you can begin your studies when it suits you best and proceed at your own pace. This makes it possible to complete courses even if you have a full-time job. Please note, however, that you must complete each nonstop course within the given timeframe.
Modern online learning environments, such as Canvas and Moodle, are used on Laurea MOOCs. As the courses are online, it’s easy to use literature, podcasts, videos, different types of assignments and other materials to support learning.
MOOCs are open to everyone. Some of Laurea’s MOOCs are equivalent to bachelor’s degree level courses, while others are equivalent to courses leading to a master’s degree. However, many of the MOOCs do not require any previous education, so anyone interested in learning new things can enrol.
Laurea’s MOOCs are worth 1 to 5 credits (1 credit corresponds to 27 hours of work). Some courses are available in Finnish and some in English. MOOC courses are free of charge but Laurea's Open UAS courses are also available which are subject to a charge.
Courses in different fields of study
Laurea offers MOOCs in several different fields of study. Examples of course themes include safety, security and risk management, digital marketing and various programming courses such as Programming with Python.
Courses that are not linked to a specific field of education or line of business are also available. Such courses include Entrepreneurship as Part of Career, Tools for Self-management and the Basic Digital Skills of Working Life.
