Project Background

The SoSECE project aims to strengthen social sustainability in early childhood education and care (ECEC) by enhancing collaboration among professionals and institutions in Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Social sustainability describes a dynamic and evolving concept rooted in the culture of action, where participation is deeply embedded at the level of operational culture, promoting community over individuality.

Project Objectives

SoSECE addresses the growing societal need for socially inclusive and innovative education systems. The project promotes:

  • Social sustainability in ECEC
  • Multi-professional collaboration between educators, social pedagogues, and other professionals
  • High-quality learning environments and practices.

Project Activities

We work together with academic and practical partners to:

  • Conduct assessments and collaborative development activities
  • Design a training strategy for ECEC professionals
  • Create resources, including:
    • A project website
    • An open online course (MOOC)
    • A practical toolkit for educators
    • National seminars and a European-wide final conference
    • A research publication documenting results

All activities are designed to share knowledge, highlight real-world examples, and promote continuous learning.

Results and Outputs

  • Equip ECEC professionals with tools to apply multi-professional approaches in daily work
  • Strengthen the quality and sustainability of ECEC, especially in socially challenging contexts
  • Provide policymakers with insights into enhancing ECEC systems through cooperation and inclusive practices

Learning materials

The SoSECE project is developing a free MOOC course that provides practical tools for applying a social pedagogical approach, strengthening multidisciplinary collaboration, and promoting social sustainability in early childhood education and training.

The course consists of six modules (3 ECTS in total), and participants receive a certificate for each completed module. The content is suitable for educators, students, policymakers, and multiprofessional teams.

The modules are released gradually, and the full course will be completed by spring 2027. The MOOC is available in Finnish, English, Latvian, Lithuanian, and Estonian, with separate learning platforms for each language version.
