Commission research from a student

A thesis is usually a commissioned development task or study. Its purpose is to produce new knowledge that serves working life in solving practical challenges or developing new solutions. A good thesis has immediate value to the client.

The thesis included in the Bachelor degree programme is 15 ECTS credits in scope, which corresponds to approximately three months of full-time work. Usually the thesis is scheduled toward the end of studies. The thesis can be done individually, as a pair, or in some cases in a group.

The thesis for students completing a higher university of applied sciences degree is 30 ECTS credits in scope.

It is not necessary to pay a fee for a thesis, but a fee often serves as a good incentive for a demanding task.

Stages of the thesis

Initiation phase

1. Topic preparation

The partner may contact Laurea, or a student may look for a project partner with a ready topic.

Laurea does:

  • The partner is informed about the various ways in which thesis topics are communicated to students (students’ intranet pages, thesis and project fairs and the partner’s possibility to participate in them, direct contacts to students through supervisors).
  • Alternatively, the student agrees on the topic and looks for a partner.

The partner does:

  • The partner contacts Laurea’s contact person.
  • It is agreed together with Laurea how to proceed with the thesis topic.
2. Partner provides thesis topic to Laurea contact person

The partner does:

  • The partner submits the thesis topics to Laurea’s contact person in written form.
  • The partner receives information from Laurea about the opportunity to participate in a thesis and/or project fair.
  • The thesis topic is presented to students via different Laurea channels.
  • The partner or the student informs Laurea’s contact person when a thesis writer has been found or when the student has found a topic.

Laurea does:

  • Laurea’s contact person determines which degree programme the thesis will be made for.
  • A possibility for the partner to participate in a thesis and/or project fair is reserved.
  • The thesis topics are posted to the students’ intranet and communicated to the theses’ coordinators of the degree programmes.
  • At Laurea, a thesis supervisor is assigned to the student once the student has found a topic or when the student is seeking a supervisor for a topic agreed with the partner. The student consults with the supervisor about the suitability of the topic as a thesis. The topic is removed from the available thesis topics across different channels.

Implementation phase

3. Partner meets the thesis student

The partner does:

  • A written agreement on the thesis is made between the student and the partner.
  • Preliminary schedules are agreed with the student and supervisors (when the work will be completed, meeting times, interim reviews).
  • The client may provide written material about the assignment to the student and supervisor.
  • Ensure that persons related to the topic are aware of and committed to providing information to the student in interviews and surveys, for example.

Laurea does:

  • The student and supervisor receive any documents related to the assignment.
  • A written agreement on the thesis can be made between the student and the partner.
  • The student is instructed on how to carry out the thesis (assessment criteria, student process, etc.).
  • The supervisor instructs the student to prepare a press release for publication after completing the thesis.
4. Taking over the assignment

The partner does:

  • The student is introduced to the development target and operating environment.
  • Key persons and practices are introduced to the student.

Laurea does:

  • The student familiarises themselves with the development target and operating environment.
  • Arrange necessary research permits with the client.
5. Developing the assignment

The partner and Laurea do:

  • In possible contacts, students present their ideas and thoughts, to which the client comments and provides guidance for further development, directing and evaluating the progress of the thesis. The supervisor may participate in the meetings.

Publication phase

6. Presentation and evaluation of results

The partner does:

  • The partner has the opportunity to participate in the presentation of the finished works and to give oral or written feedback on the work.
  • The partner evaluates the output in relation to the assignment and objectives.
  • If desired, the partner can publish a stylized (media)release made from the thesis (if the student has produced a media release) or communicate as they wish.

Laurea does:

  • The student presents the final work.
  • Laurea’s supervisors provide their feedback on the work to the student.
  • Laurea’s supervisor decides whether to publish a media release across different channels. (Media releases to be published are stylized in Laurea’s publishing services)
  • The student’s thesis report is ready.
  • The student sends the finished work to the client.
  • Laurea’s supervisors evaluate the work. Feedback provided by the partner may be used.
  • Permission is requested from the partner to publish the (media)release (text, poster, video) in Laurea’s various channels.
7. Conclusions and follow-up actions

The partner and Laurea do:

  • Discuss possible follow-up actions and/or further ideas with Laurea representatives.
  • A meeting is arranged regarding follow-up ideas to map out and decide how to continue collaboration (thesis, studies, internship, initiative, project)
  • When it has been decided how to continue, return to step 1 of the work process.

Advertise a thesis topic on JobTeaser

Companies can post free of charge an open thesis topic as well as job or internship positions to Laurea’s students. A company has two options to leave an open notice on JobTeaser:

  1. A company can create its own company profile and leave an announcement about an open position or announce events. The company profile functions as a student-oriented version of the company’s website.
  2. The company can create a recruiter’s account and leave an announcement only for an open position.

Why create a company profile?

  • Creating a company profile offers your company the opportunity to present your operations in more detail and you can easily edit the company’s information
  • Your company profile is continuously visible to students even if you do not have open positions.
  • Through your profile, you can conveniently inform students about various working life events you organise, such as webinars or your own recruitment events.
  • Through the company profile you can update the notices you have posted yourself. If an open position is filled before the application period ends, you can remove the notice yourself (the notice is also removed automatically when the application period ends)
  • Notices posted by your company are saved in your company profile, so you can use it later as a template for a new notice if needed
  • Both students and alumni use JobTeaser when searching for open positions or information about events that interest them.
  • Key partners have the opportunity to browse students’ CVs and directly recruit suitable candidates.

Please note that if you choose to create a company profile, we ask you to carefully fill in the required fields. A well-made company profile attracts students to learn about your company and to apply for your open positions.

When your company has posted a notice about a thesis topic, it must be approved by Laurea, where the notice is checked and then published on the JobTeaser career portal.
