Smart learning paths

The project (Eurostars E9666) between Claned group, Funka Nu AB and Laurea University of Applied Sciences builds automated scaffolding for online learners using personalized learning paths. A variety of tools will be built along the project. These include setting and scheduling individual learning goals, and methods for supporting effective studying and keeping students engaged.

The challenge

Web materials, massive open online courses and other learning resources offer nearly unlimited resources for self-directed learning. However, high dropout and other problems have demonstrated that there is a need for personalized support in online learning. CLANED provides insights into factors impacting learning, thus reduced drop out ratios, continuously improved learning materials and pedagogy leading to improved education ranking results.

The cooperation

The project will include research on smart learning data algorithms, parameters, tools and metrics to be implemented in CLANED’s recommendation engine. As a result, CLANED users will be offered highly customized evidence-based learning paths based on the user history, current goals, special needs and statistical evidence. Collaboration with Funka Nu will allow CLANED to design and develop a solution that will be used universally, to work for all users, regardless of disabilities. This is a key element for providing truly personalized content and recommendations for individual students. Laurea will research the market possibilities in Asia, especially in India, and develop business models for market entry.
