Haaga-Helia, Laurea and Metropolia to establish an alliance

Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, Laurea University of Applied Sciences and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences will establish a strategic alliance. In-depth allied cooperation will open up flexible study paths and facilitate the creation of a learning-centric degree from the broad-scoped education range offered by the three independent institutions. The objective is to facilitate faster completion of studies and smooth transfer from one education sector to another.

At the same time this is the response by universities of applied sciences in the Helsinki area to the requirements of structural development. Active regional cooperation forms a unique foundation for education export and promotion of internalisation.

- The alliance is a solution, which will further strengthen recognised, effective and productive education at universities of applied sciences. Alliance member universities of applied sciences are already now at the forefront of Finnish education, and voluntary cooperation will lead to the best results in the future as well, Teemu Kokko, Riitta Konkola and Jouni Koski, the presidents from participating universities of applied sciences jointly stated.

In practice, the alliance will be realised via progressively increasing cooperation. The alliance member universities of applied sciences are involved in seven development projects that are linked to the alliance. The projects will allow students freer mobility between the institutions. Education will become learning-centric and be better able to respond to future challenges. Transfer from one education sector to another will be simplified.

- We want to eliminate unnecessary hurdles and offer students more possibilities for developing themselves: versatile degrees, internationalisation and entrepreneurship. The alliance's most important objective is content-based development of education, which relies on a network-like approach and agility instead of the creation of new administrative structures, the presidents explain.

The alliance agreement was signed on Friday 30 September 2016.
