During the Bachelor’s Degree programme in Hospitality Management and Service Design, you will acquire the creative and analytical skills to thrive in the hospitality and service field. You will learn the managerial competences in planning, organizing, and communicating. Studies in the Hospitality Management and Service Design programme combine theory and practice. You will learn service design methods through classroom studies and practical working life projects.

Innovation and development projects with Hospitality Field companies during your studies

As a student, you will apply theoretical concepts to real-world cases and practical assignments. In particular, you will learn how to implement service design methods in innovation and development projects. This is accomplished through work on versatile projects in development hubs with companies and on campus. One important part of the studies is working in our own restaurant BarLaurea, where you can acquire the developmental skills and professional competence needed in Hospitality Management. 

Leaders of the future

International study visits will provide experience and understanding of the ever-growing international clientele. In addition to service business studies, the degree programme offers a wide range of studies in leadership, digitalization, communication and interaction, since the capability to lead work processes, network and understand the needs of customers is a core competence. User-centricity is essential to the studies. Students will also gain competences to operate successfully in the modern digitalized business environment. The ability to interpret data is a key skill to success in Hospitality Management. Knowledge Management is a core competence of future managers and experts.

The programme is composed of compulsory core competencies, complementary competencies, job placements and final project/thesis

Core competence

The compulsory core competencies contain modules that will give you fundamental skills and competencies on the following areas:

  • Hospitality Management (40 cr) 

    During these studies, you will learn to perform as a professional in the ever-changing hospitality field. Living Lab BarLaurea offers a variety of ways for learning through participation and development of service processes. You will work in all areas of BarLaurea, both as an employee and as a process planner and a developer. You will experience and develop hospitality services in an international context, and investigate different industry field: restaurants, events, and tourism business.

  • Service Design (30 cr) 

    During these studies, you will view, plan and act upon developmental needs of clients to employ Design Thinking into practice. Various methods of Design Thinking as well as Lean and facilitation methods are implemented in the students' real-life projects. Customer Experience Management and organizational development are closely connected to your learning environment.

  • Leadership and Business (30 cr) 

    During these studies, you will learn to think from entrepreneurial and business perspectives and achieve a business mindset. These studies help you to develop communication, digital and interaction skills, and competencies in customer-oriented service and quality management as for the tasks and needs of service operations. You will learn to produce and lead high-quality services in the hospitality field.

  • Expert in a Work Community – work placements (30 cr) 

    You will deepen your expertise in a chosen field and learn how to apply for jobs that support your career plan and to act responsibly in national and international positions requiring professional expertise. You will develop the capacity to develop the activities of organizations and your own expertise.

  • Expert in Development and Workplace Innovation (including the Bachelor’s thesis) (30 cr) 

    This module supports career development and the creation of a work identity. You will carry out research and development work, both individually and in teams. You learn to identify development targets in the workplace, as well as plan, implement and evaluate a project in cooperation with different networks in the workplace.

Complementary competence

You may construct your study path according to your personal ambitions and subjects of interest, either concentrating on one of the following modules or choosing a combination of those!

  • Innovating Food Services (10cr) 

    You will learn to develop food services in a multisensory and customer-oriented manner while considering current trends. You’ll also be able to apply sensory evaluation methods in developing food products.

  • Tourism Service Developer (40cr) 

    You’ll learn to apply business thinking in tourism services, and to develop customer-oriented services and processes in a hotel in accordance with quality guidelines. You’ll develop a deeper, overall understanding of the travel and tourism sector, and deepen your understanding with respect to marketing strategies in tourism services. You’ll also learn to forecast future trends in planning and development.

  • Producer of Event Services (35cr) 

    You’ll learn to plan, implement, manage, evaluate and develop customer-oriented event services profitably and safely while offering peak experiences in cooperation with the customers by using service design methods.

At Laurea, we encourage you to take part in voluntary work during your studies. The objective is that everyone develops their professional competences during their studies by participating in voluntary work in a role they choose themselves. You can fit voluntary work into any stage of your studies and gain credits.

Studying in the Hospitality Management and Service Design programme

Hospitality Management and Service Design is a daytime programme and the studies consist of contact teaching and face-to-face instruction. The programme is designed to be completed in three and a half years. 

You become a professional in Hospitality Management by studying, running projects with teams during the study units, leading yourself and learning how to develop and design services in operations in the hospitality field. As a key element of your studies, you will collaborate with coaches, experts and entrepreneurs from business life to work on various projects and authentic business challenges in an international environment. You can influence the direction in which your competence develops by the work placements and thesis. 

In the thesis you will demonstrate your expertise in your field. You can do it as a workplace development project or part of the university of applied sciences' research and development activities. The thesis emphasizes cooperation between various organizations.

Work placements and employment

Hospitality Management and Service Design graduates are practically oriented professionals who can work as developers, experts, and managers in different organizations and companies. They can employ analytical skills in decision-making and will have competence in designing and developing services and operations in organizations and companies in the field.

As a graduate, you may work in various roles, such as:

  • Project Manager
  • Event Producer
  • Restaurant Manager
  • Service Design Planner/Expert
  • Customer Service Officer

Internationality in studies

You will need international and multicultural competence as part of your professional expertise in the workplace, whether your job is in Finland or abroad. You can include studies or a placement abroad, language studies, intercultural communication studies, and projects implemented in international cooperation in your personal study plan. In addition, international study visits will provide experience and understanding of the ever-growing international clientele.

Tuition fees and scholarships

Non-EU/EEA area students in degree programmes taught in English are charged tuition fees.

Tuition fee: €8 000/ academic year for non EU/EEA students.

Opportunities for further studies

experience, you can be admitted as a student in a master's degree programme in an university of applied sciences. For graduates of our Hospitality Management and Service Design programme, we highly recommend Master’s Degree programme in Service Innovation and Design, which takes you deeper in to the world of service design, design thinking and service development.

Once you have a bachelor's degree from a university of applied sciences, you can also apply for a place at a university. In that case, you may be required to take complementary studies. Universities of applied sciences offer continuing education of various lengths. You can also acquire new knowledge through open university or open university of applied sciences studies.
