Kwame Afreh named Laurea Alumnus of the Year 2018

Alumnus of the Year was announced at the traditional Grand Alumni Evening.

Kwame Afreh, Bachelor of Business Information Technology has been selected as the winner of the Laurea University of Applied Sciences Alumnus of the Year 2018 prize. Afreh graduated from the Degree Programme in Business Information Technology in 2013.

Afreh started his studies at Laurea Leppävaara campus in 2009, among the first group of students studying the Degree Programme in Business Information Technology in English. He currently works as a product manager at the Finnish company Webropol.

In the justifications for the Alumnus of the Year prize, Kwame Afreh was praised especially for active participation in Laurea alumni activities. After his graduation Kwame has for example been a mentor for current students and visited Laurea study units on many occasions as a guest lecturer. He has also participated in the Career and Recruitment Day events organized at Laurea mainly to speak to the students about his studies at Laurea and working life.

- Now that I've received this recognition for what I've done as an alumni of Laurea I see it as a challenge to do even more, Kwame Afreh states.

- Now I want to encourage international students to get even more involved with Laurea after their graduation and give back something we got when we were studying. I see it very important that alumni share their experiences with current students, especially when it comes to finding a job in Finland, he continues.

An Alumnus of the Year has been selected at Laurea since 2008. The prize is awarded to a Laurea graduate who has brought forward his or her training and the Laurea background in a positive manner. Also emphasized in the selection criteria is a positive approach to developing the work or the working community.

Proposals for recipients of the prize are accepted from all Laurea graduates and all members of Laurea staff.  The final selection was made on the basis of the proposals by a development group for Laurea alumni activities.

The winner of the Alumnus of the Year prize was announced at the traditional Grand Alumni Evening in Helsinki on Tuesday the 22th of May. The Alumnus of the Year prize at Laurea is called the Pentti Rauhala Prize, in honour of PhD Pentti Rauhala, who retired as President of Laurea in 2011.

Laurea has different activities to serve over 23,000 Laurea graduates, all experts in working life, and to get them involved in developing Laurea's research, development and innovation activities. The goal is to include the competencies of Laurea graduates as part of the teaching, example Laurea Alumni serve also as visiting lecturers for the students.
